Alpine Chamois - Rupicapra rupicapra

The Alpine Chamois, a nimble mountain goat-antelope from Europe, was introduced to New Zealand’s Southern Alps in 1907 as a gift from Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. With their short hooked horns and sure-footed agility, chamois thrive in steep alpine terrain, where they graze on grasses, herbs, and shrubs.

Though admired for their grace, chamois are an introduced species that compete with native alpine fauna for food and damage fragile vegetation. They are now managed through hunting and conservation measures to limit their impact on New Zealand’s unique mountain ecosystems.
