Introduced from the mountains of northern India in 1904, Himalayan tahr were released into the Southern Alps as part of the acclimatisation era. Perfectly suited to steep and rugged terrain, they multiplied rapidly, their sure-footed presence now a familiar silhouette on alpine slopes.

Admired for their thick coats and curved horns, they are both valued as a game animal and recognised for the ecological challenges they bring — a striking example of how introduced species have left their mark on New Zealand’s wild landscapes.
