Kererū | Woodpigeon - Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae
The kererū is a large, striking pigeon, gleaming green and purple in the sunlight, and vital for spreading the seeds of native trees. Its heavy wingbeats and clumsy landings make it a familiar presence in both forest and garden.
Conservation: Widespread, though vulnerable to predators such as feral cats feral, possums, stoats, and ship rats, especially during nesting.; numbers are recovering in areas with active conservation.
