Large White Pig - Sus domesticus
The Large White is one of the world’s most widespread pig breeds, originally developed in Britain for its fast growth and adaptability. With its distinctive upright ears and pale pink skin, it is a familiar sight on farms and in agricultural shows, valued for both pork and bacon production.
Introduced during the 19th century, Large Whites became a foundation of commercial pig farming in New Zealand. While central to agriculture, feral pigs descended from early domestic stock have had severe ecological impacts, rooting through forests and damaging native plants and ground-nesting bird habitats.
