North Island Kākā | Nestor meridionalis
The kākā is a large, forest parrot, its earthy feathers lit by flashes of scarlet beneath the wings. Curious, playful, and noisy, it brings life and character to native forests.
Conservation: Currently classified as At Risk – Recovering, primarily due to significant threats from stoats and possums. Female birds during nesting periods face increased vulnerability. However, populations are rising within protected sanctuaries as a result of effective predator management efforts.
