Brought to New Zealand in the late 19th century, fallow deer were introduced for sport and quickly found a foothold in forests and farmland edges. Recognised by their elegant build and distinctive spotted coats, they became part of the acclimatised landscape, altering vegetation and shaping ecosystems in subtle but lasting ways. Today, they remain both admired and contested — a graceful reminder of the country’s acclimatisation experiments.
