Ruru | Morepork - Ninox novaeseelandiae

The morepork, or ruru, is Aotearoa’s native owl, its amber eyes glowing in the dark as its mournful call echoes through the night. Elusive yet ever-present, it embodies the mystery of the forest.

Conservation: Although still widespread, the Morepork faces threats from predators and the decline of mature forest environments. Females nesting in tree cavities are especially at risk from stoats, possums, and rats, which endanger their eggs and chicks. Effective predator management significantly contributes to increasing their numbers.
