The tīeke is a forest-dwelling bird with glossy black plumage, chestnut shoulders, and a sharp, melodic call that rings through native bush. Known for its cautious and watchful nature, it moves through the forest in small family groups, alert and curious.

Conservation: Nationally Endangered. Populations were once confined to offshore islands but are now gradually recovering thanks to intensive predator control and reintroduction programmes.
