Wapiti - Cervus canadensis
Gifted to New Zealand from North America in the early 1900s, wapiti were released into Fiordland’s remote valleys as part of the acclimatisation movement. Larger and more robust than red deer, they soon interbred with them, creating herds that reshaped the region’s ecology.
With their broad antlers and imposing presence, wapiti remain both an emblem of grandeur and a reminder of the ambitions and consequences of introducing foreign species to new lands.
